Our Path to Membership is Flexible

Perry Highway Lutheran Church (PHLC) is currently rebuilding and expanding, so not all of the needed structure is in place. However, we still encourage potential new members to follow a similar path to membership outlined by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), a denomination within the larger Lutheran tradition. Here is a general outline of the recommended path to membership at Perry Highway Lutheran Church during this transitional period:

Attend worship services: The first step to joining Perry Highway Lutheran Church is to attend worship services regularly. This allows you to get a feel for the community, its teachings, and its practices as we continue to rebuild and grow.

Participate in church activities: Engage in various church activities, such as Bible studies, small groups, or community outreach programs. This helps you connect with other members and deepens your understanding of the church’s mission and values.

Inquiry or information session: As we finalize our processes, we will offer informational sessions or classes for those interested in membership. These sessions will provide an overview of the church’s beliefs, history, and structure, and they will be an opportunity for you to ask questions and learn more about the denomination.

Meet with the pastor or church leader: Schedule a meeting with the pastor or a church leader to discuss your interest in joining the congregation. This allows you to share your faith journey, ask questions, and express any concerns.

Complete a membership class or catechism: Once our processes are finalized, Perry Highway Lutheran Church will likely require prospective members to participate in a membership class or catechism course. This may cover topics such as Lutheran theology, the sacraments, the liturgy, and the responsibilities of membership. In the meantime, during this transition period, we understand that potential members may have questions or feel uncertain about certain aspects of the church and its teachings. We encourage you to contact Pastor Ryan for guidance on acquiring any missing knowledge or seeking clarification on any aspects of your faith journey. Pastor Ryan is more than happy to offer his support and expertise to ensure that you feel confident in your decision to join Perry Highway Lutheran Church and are well-prepared for a fulfilling and meaningful membership experience within our community.

Affirm your faith: Once you have completed the necessary classes or courses, you will be asked to affirm your faith in Jesus Christ and your commitment to the ELCA and the specific congregation. This may take place during a special service or ceremony.

Officially join the congregation: After affirming your faith, you will become an official Perry Highway Lutheran Church congregation member. This may involve signing a membership covenant or being recognized during a worship service.

Engage in the life of the church: As a member of Perry Highway Lutheran Church, you are encouraged to actively participate in worship, serve in various ministries, and support the church through your time, talents, and resources as we continue to expand and strengthen our community.

In closing, we warmly encourage potential new members to follow this path toward membership as it applies to their specific situations, keeping in mind that our church is in a period of growth and transition. Perry Highway Lutheran Church is committed to welcoming new members in accordance with the Reconciling in Christ (RIC) guidelines for the ELCA, which emphasize inclusivity and acceptance for all, regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, or background. As you embark on this journey, know that you are joining a supportive, caring, and diverse community that seeks to nurture your faith and grow together in love and understanding. We eagerly anticipate welcoming you into our congregation and witnessing the unique gifts and perspectives you will bring to our ever-evolving church family.
