LAMPa News Highlights – September

1. Welcome Quentin Bernhard! We’re excited to introduce Quentin Bernhard, our new ELCA Hunger Advocacy Fellow for 2023-24. With Pennsylvania roots and a global outlook from his year in Senegal with ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission, Quentin is set to bring a fresh perspective to our team.

2. Time’s Ticking on Faith & Civic Life Feedback Only a few weeks remain to study and provide feedback on the development of a statement concerning government, civic engagement, and the church-state relationship. This guide is an excellent resource for small groups, encouraging discussions on vital issues.

3. Rev. Justin Lingenfelter Appointed to LAMPa’s Policy Council Bishop Craig Miller has chosen Rev. Justin Lingenfelter to represent the Upper Susquehanna Synod on LAMPa’s Policy Council. Reverend Lingenfelter has a deep connection with the community, especially with advocacy to address hunger.

4. A Call to College Students: Vote! Students starting college might be voting for the first time. Whether they’re considering transferring their registration or applying for an absentee/mail-in ballot, it’s essential they’re informed and active. More details on registration and voting available.

5. Seminarian Amy Kelly Joins LAMPa Policy Council With Rev. Erin Jones moving to LAMPa’s staff, seminarian Amy Kelly will take her place on the policy council. Amy, who is pursuing a Master’s in Justice and Reconciliation, has a keen interest in advocacy relating to hunger, education, and disability issues.

6. New Environmental Justice Policy in PA The Shapiro Administration plans to roll out a new environmental justice policy to extend protections to vulnerable communities across Pennsylvania. This policy will impact areas that represent 20% of the Commonwealth.

7. A Warm Welcome to Rev. Eric Damon LAMPa’s Policy Council will now also include Rev. Eric Damon from the SWPA Synod. With a diverse background, from carpentry to divinity, he brings a unique perspective, emphasizing rural ministry and advocacy.

8. WIC Nutrition Program Under Threat The WIC (Women Infants and Children) nutrition program’s funding is in jeopardy, despite the rising demand witnessed in our hunger ministries. Learn more about this issue and how you can take action.

9. Advocate for Improved Disaster Response Policies With escalating climate-related disasters, it’s crucial to press Congress to bolster community resilience and simplify the process to obtain FEMA benefits after disasters.

10. Upcoming Event Sept. 26 – The Capitol All-Stars Legislative Softball Game brings together elected officials from all parties to rally against hunger. Started in 2013, this game has always been about more than just softball, with proceeds benefiting PA food banks.
