DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nWe Are Beggars\, This Is True\n“We are beggars; this is true.” These are reported to be Martin Luther’s last written words. Christians are “beggars” for God’s grace\, undeserving but graced nonetheless. A beggar’s faith focuses not on what is given or accomplished or believed\, but on what is received: the healing and sustenance desperately longed for and needed. \nIn today’s gospel\, the Canaanite woman is such a “beggar” for Jesus’ healing for her daughter. She is denied a place at the table at first\, but she will accept even “crumbs” in the faith that Jesus’ healing power and love are intended even for her. As a gentile\, she inhabits the margins of Jesus’ mission “to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matt. 15:24). Jesus’ eventual response to her beggar’s faith reveals that the love of God even encompasses the margins. \nMarginalized or not\, we are all beggars before God\, as Paul reminds the Romans—all “imprisoned . . . in disobedience” (Rom. 11:32) and dependent on God. Thus\, our sense of “insider” and “outsider” crumbles in the face of our common need and God’s abundant mercy to all. Instead of dividing those who have a place at the table and those who get crumbs\, we have an opportunity to share hospitality with our fellow beggars. \nIt can be challenging to see ourselves as beggars. Today the Canaanite woman becomes our model\, as she persists with both humility and audacity. As disciples of Jesus and “beggars” for God’s grace\, we live the same paradox of humility and audacity\, boldly coming to Jesus and humbly acknowledging our need. Even though crumbs from God’s table would be enough for us\, we are offered instead the abundance of Jesus’ own self in bread and wine and invited to share this abundance with insider and outsider alike. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nConfessing Christ\, Formed in Faith\nIn late August\, students are preparing to go back to school\, and many churches gear up for a new year of Christian education. It is a good time to be reminded of the heart of Christian formation: conformation and transformation (Rom. 12:2). \nDisciples are formed over time—shaped by learning\, worship\, and all aspects of Christian life in community. As it was for Peter\, part of our formation is learning to confess Jesus as the Messiah\, not only with the right words but also through an experience of the living God in Christ. And along with Peter\, through such formation we also discover who we are in relation to God: After Peter “confesses” Jesus’ identity of Messiah\, Jesus “confesses” Peter’s identity by calling out his name and vocation. \nTraditionally\, Lutheran worship contains two confessions which keep forming us: a confession of sin and a confession of faith. In the first\, we acknowledge who we are as sinner and saint\, and in the second\, we acknowledge who God is in the mystery of the Trinity. Like Peter’s\, our own identity is revealed in those truths. And\, we might say\, we are continually formed by and through them. \nPeter’s confession is not a precondition for following Jesus; it comes in the middle of his journey of discipleship. Our formation too is a long process—lifelong\, in fact—which begins at baptism (and even before!) and is guided by those who travel before and with us. At this time of year\, as we explore our own formation\, identity\, and vocation as disciples of Jesus\, Isaiah entreats us\, “Look to the rock from which you were hewn” (51:1). Envisioning Peter the “rock” (Matt. 16:18)\, we might also consider how we are “chips off the old block” of our forebears in faith. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons
