DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nJesus\, Cornerstone of Our Faith\nGod has showered humanity with gifts and blessings\, but humanity continues to abuse those gifts. We have been entrusted with a creation to care for\, and in our shortsightedness we abuse and pollute the earth\, even bringing about the extinction of entire species. We have been given the ability to create so many wonderful things\, and even this gift we abuse as we gather and keep as much as we can for ourselves. \nThis is nothing new. Even in the days of Isaiah it was clear the people turned away from God’s gifts. God expected righteousness and justice. Instead the people responded with bloodshed and suffering\, turning away from God. \nEven if you can think of all the ways you have not turned from God and all the ways you have been faithful\, it does no good. As Paul reminds us in the reading from Philippians\, “Yet whatever gains I had\, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ” (Phil. 3:7). Even all of Paul’s good and faithful acts add up to nothing. For Paul\, and for us\, all that matters is Jesus. \nAs Christ himself reminds us\, he is our rock\, our cornerstone. Jesus is the foundation for our faith and the foundation for our lives. Even as we turn from Jesus\, even as we reject Jesus\, he returns to us with love and forgiveness. This is the grace of God\, the love of God coming into our world and into our lives. To our joy we discover the open arms of Jesus on the cross\, bringing life into this world even where there is death; bringing hope where there is despair; and bringing resurrection to all creation. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nExpensive Wedding. Expensive Grace.\nAn average wedding in North America can easily cost tens of thousands of dollars—or more! From the venue to flowers to food\, invitations to music to photos\, formal wear to centerpieces to officiants\, getting married is not cheap. \nIn today’s gospel Jesus tells a parable about a wedding invitation\, a banquet\, and God’s grace. Jesus teaches about a king who ultimately invites all people to a wedding banquet. At first this parable seems to portray a wide open and gracious invitation to a wedding celebration. However\, by the end it is hard not to feel sorry for the poor guy who gets a last-minute invitation but gets thrown out for not wearing the correct wedding duds! Again\, getting married is not cheap—but neither is grace. \nReceiving God’s grace changes people. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer taught\, God’s grace is not cheap; it comes at a great cost upon the cross. Once we receive this costly grace\, our lives are never the same. This grace compels us to act and calls us to bear fruit with our lives\, sharing this grace with others. To continue to live in the same way after receiving this gracious invitation is not an option. So what are we to do? We simply receive the gracious invitation to the banquet and find a changing room—it’s time to live a new life. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nWhat’s in Your Wallet? Not Enough.\nSay the word stewardship in some congregations and people are protectively guarding their wallets faster than you can say “pledge card”! Unfortunately\, too often we associate stewardship exclusively with issues of money. The good news is that God wants our whole lives\, wallets and all! Nevertheless\, this week is prime time for stewardship campaigns in congregations across North America. Today’s gospel provides an ideal time to reflect on stewardship of all sorts—time\, talent\, and financial treasures. \nThe Pharisees approach Jesus in a thinly veiled attempt to trap him on issues of financial obligations to the Roman government. Their question of Jesus\, simplified to the extreme\, is\, “Who gets your wallet?” If Jesus answered one way\, he would be guilty of treason. If he answered the other way\, he would have been considered guilty of heresy in the eyes of the religious leaders. Jesus responds by issuing a challenge of his own: “Give . . . to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s” (Matt. 22:21). This statement challenges us to ponder: If God created the world and everything in it\, doesn’t everything belong to God? God wants a whole lot more than just your wallet. God wants your life\, wallet and all! \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nJesus Is Really into Relationships!\nLove God\, love neighbor\, and love yourself. Jesus is really into relationships! Oftentimes\, even if unintentionally\, we put loving ourselves first\, and because “we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves” (ELW\, p. 95) we usually do a poor job of actually loving ourselves. This means we have less love to give to God and our neighbors. Jesus puts relationship with God first. He doesn’t do this to make us last but so that we can fully understand love and relationship the way God desires it for us. \nToday’s readings give us insight into the ways God desires us to be in relationship: by being just in all our dealings with others\, by not being led astray by the wicked\, by sharing the gospel with humility and tender care\, and by loving God and neighbor. It might sound simple\, but relationships are far from simple. Even the best relationships include struggle. \nPeople in our congregations struggle with relationships each and every day. Love should be an easy thing\, but it takes work and effort to love God\, love others\, and love oneself. The psalmist uses the image of trees planted by streams of water to describe people who “delight in the law of the Lord” (Ps. 1:2). These are not weak\, brittle\, or dying trees; these are strong trees that prosper. Our faith plants us\, nourishes us\, and strengthens us to love. \nHow can we be like trees planted by streams of water? In what ways can the church help people to make and maintain healthy relationships? How do we encourage self-worth and humility? This is an excellent day to ask these questions\, to create forums where answers can be discussed\, and to remind one another how much God truly loves us. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons
