SUMMARY:Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\nLife in Christ Includes Praise and Lament\nThough we may prefer to think of God giving us lives of joy and ease\, a full life in Christ also includes sorrow and grief. To the extent we are willing to acknowledge God’s presence in every circumstance\, our faith becomes integrated and sustainable through a lifetime. \nThe texts for today offer a survey of faith-full moments for the people of God\, from arguably the most disturbing story in all our scriptures (Genesis 22; semicontinuous series) to the proclamation of God’s everlasting faithfulness (Psalms 89 and 13). \nDoes our worship avoid faithful lament? \nMarked by transformation as clear and life and death (Romans 6)\, the disciple naturally embodies the gospel of Jesus Christ. Like it or not\, this includes moments of sadness\, grief\, and betrayal that were very much a part of Jesus’ faithful journey. If our lives are identified with Christ\, disciples can name both joys and sorrows as dimensions of Christ’s story and purpose. \nThe greatest challenge of faith for most Christians is the moment of suffering\, so this day invites us to practice faithful lament. In an age of denial when difficult things are swept under the rug\, we may resist the idea that God wants anything to do with suffering. Our scriptures\, however\, ensure we do not avoid earth-bound realities. The psalmist wails a prayer in faith that not only laments abandonment by God but also confesses God’s steadfast love (Psalm 13; semicontinuous series). The story of Abraham and Isaac haunts our imaginations when we expect God to make life easy. \nWorship calls us to faithfully lament as well as praise. Let today be a service of full-hearted proclamation of the depths of life in Christ. \n~From Sundays & Seasons

SUMMARY:Adult Bible Study
DESCRIPTION:Adult Bible Study\nAre you looking for a meaningful way to engage with scripture and connect with others on the journey of faith? Our ongoing Bible Study at Perry Highway Lutheran Church is the perfect opportunity to do just that—no matter where you are on your spiritual path. \nAt PHLC\, we believe Bible Study isn’t about having all the answers or being a “Bible expert.” Instead\, it’s about creating a welcoming space where curiosity is encouraged and every voice matters. Together\, we open the scriptures with honesty and humility\, asking real questions\, sharing life experiences\, and exploring how these ancient words continue to speak into our modern lives. Faith\, after all\, grows best in conversation. \nEach gathering is a blend of thoughtful reflection and genuine connection. Some weeks we find ourselves laughing together; other weeks we wrestle with challenging passages or tough questions about life\, justice\, and hope. Always\, we seek to listen deeply—to scripture\, to one another\, and to the movement of God in our everyday lives. This is a place where doubts are not feared\, stories are honored\, and grace is practiced. \nWhether you’ve been attending church for many years\, are returning after time away\, or are simply curious about scripture and faith\, you are truly welcome here. You don’t need prior knowledge\, special preparation\, or the “right” answers. Just bring your authentic self and an open heart. \nOur Bible Study community is grounded in encouragement and support\, helping one another discern how to live out a grace-filled\, compassionate life in the real world—at work\, at home\, and in our wider community. \nBest of all\, you can join us virtually\, making it easy to participate wherever life finds you. If you’re seeking connection\, thoughtful conversation\, and a deeper engagement with scripture\, we would love for you to be part of this journey with us. \nTo join virtually\, email Pastor Ryan at pastor@phlc.org for the link.

SUMMARY:Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\nGod Comes First\nGod is\, the theologians say\, transcendent—beyond us\, always exceeding our easy grasp. Recognizing God’s awesome transcendence brings a reevaluation of other values. The God of vertigo-inspiring infinitude is also the God who know the hairs of our head. Trusting this God\, fear is defanged and faith becomes a sort of courage. We live in faithful relationship to the hair-counting God as we joyfully “acknowledge” the one who acknowledges us. And as we do so\, reveling in the intimacy of God’s loving regard for us\, other relationships\, even familial ones\, take on a different cast. God comes first\, we realize\, not only in priority\, but ontologically\, “in the beginning” (John 1:1). Before the God who is at once gracious and transcendent\, we “lose” our lives and discover the true life in following the way of Jesus the crucified Son. \n~From Sundays & Seasons

SUMMARY:Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\nPlentiful Harvest\nIn today’s gospel reading\, Jesus speaks of the church’s mission with images drawn from daily life. The harvest is already plentiful\, he says\, but laborers are needed for work in the fields of daily life. What are we to do? We are to do that to which our worship invites us: Let our conversation be shaped by the good news\, extend Christ’s peace wherever we find ourselves\, and share our bread with the hungry. \n~From Sundays & Seasons

SUMMARY:Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\nLight\, Warmth\, and Watering\nThe weeks of summer coincide with the beginning of the Pentecost season. Summer brings sunny warmth\, growing crops\, and the promise of harvest: images of the Holy Spirit’s presence and activity in our lives\, the church\, and the world. Hosea speaks of God’s presence as the dawn\, as a gentle shower\, as light. In our life together as a community of faith\, what needs light\, warmth\, and watering to grow and flourish? How might we be attentive to others’ needs to receive this nourishment through God’s words of life and holy supper? \n~From Sundays & Seasons

SUMMARY:Pub Theology
DESCRIPTION:Pub Theology\nJoin us at Allegheny City Brewing’s Brighton Heights location for PHLC’s “Pub Theology” gathering on June 5 at 7 pm for an evening of thoughtful conversation\, good company\, and meaningful reflection in a relaxed setting. Time and location are still to be determined\, but all are invited to come together for open discussion about faith\, life\, current events\, and the questions that shape our daily experiences. \nPub Theology creates space for honest dialogue outside the walls of the church\, welcoming people from all backgrounds and perspectives. Whether you have been part of the church community for years or are simply curious about spiritual conversations in an informal environment\, this gathering offers an opportunity to connect with others in a welcoming and respectful atmosphere. There is no pressure to have all the answers—just a willingness to listen\, share\, and engage with one another. \nDiscussions may touch on scripture\, culture\, relationships\, justice\, hope\, doubt\, and the ways faith intersects with everyday life. Some evenings are lighthearted\, others more reflective\, but every conversation is grounded in community and mutual respect. Pub Theology reminds us that meaningful spiritual conversations can happen anywhere people gather together. \nBring a friend\, grab a drink or snack\, and join us as we continue building connections through conversation and fellowship. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people\, deepen relationships\, and explore big questions in a casual and welcoming environment. \nWe hope you will make plans to join us for this engaging evening of conversation\, community\, and connection at PHLC’s Pub Theology on June 5.

SUMMARY:Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\nCelebrating Our God beyond Understanding\nThe festival of the Holy Trinity celebrates the wonder of relationship with God while leaving us distinctly dissatisfied with our limited understanding of what God is. While guarding against the idolatry of language\, we survey our scripture\, doctrine\, creeds\, and symbols of our heritage. Equally important\, we pray for God to inspire fresh\, innovative ideas of God in the present moment. \nToday’s gospel contains one of the few biblical references to the trinitarian formula. As the eleven are commissioned to make disciples\, baptize\, and teach\, we are invited to consider our calling to influence the world with the good news of God’s love. The text from Second Corinthians also includes a kind of naming of the Holy Trinity in an affectionate sign-off of a personal letter. With the psalm praising God the creator and sustainer of all creation\, Genesis 1 relates the first of two creation stories\, this one an ancient liturgy celebrating God as a divine plural. \nThat God that is beyond our understanding may be both troubling and comforting. The temptation may be to attempt to apprehend the idea of God with our intellect\, offering the worshiping assembly a showcase of various models for God. The result is usually disappointing and feeds our bias toward intellectualism. Another possibility is to celebrate God’s presence in all its glory and colorful wonder and our belonging to this wonder-full God. \n~From Sundays & Seasons

SUMMARY:Meditation Group
DESCRIPTION:Meditation Group\nThis group will meet on May 27 at 7:00 pm\, and all are welcome to join us—whether you are brand new to meditation or have some experience. This gathering is an invitation to slow down\, breathe\, and create space for reflection in the midst of busy and often demanding lives. \nMeditation has been practiced for millennia by Christians\, Buddhists\, and people of many other faith traditions. Across these traditions\, meditation is valued as a way to move beyond ideas about spirituality and instead encounter our lived experience more fully. Through quiet attention\, gentle guidance\, and shared practice\, meditation helps us notice what is happening within us—our thoughts\, emotions\, physical sensations\, and prayers—in the present moment. \nFor Christians\, meditation can be a way of deepening awareness of God’s presence\, listening more closely to the movement of the Spirit\, and resting in sacred silence. For others\, it may be experienced as a practice of mindfulness that cultivates compassion\, clarity\, and inner peace. No matter your background or beliefs\, this group offers a welcoming space to explore meditation as a tool for spiritual growth\, self-awareness\, and stress reduction. \nEach session will include simple instruction\, time for guided and silent meditation\, and an opportunity for reflection and discussion. There is no expectation to share more than you are comfortable with\, and no prior knowledge is required. Come as you are—curious\, tired\, hopeful\, or simply seeking a moment of calm. \nIf you are longing for greater mindfulness\, emotional balance\, or a deeper connection to your inner life\, we invite you to join us  as we enjoy this journey together.

SUMMARY:Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\nGod Gives More than Enough\nIt is the “first day of the week” (John 20:19)\, the day of the new creation\, but to those locked away in the upper room in fear\, the world is as it always has been. So entrenched are they in the ways of grief and guilt that the Risen One in their midst needs to offer his life-giving invitation twice: “Peace be with you.” The logic of the new age is peace\, not retribution; forgiveness\, not vengeance. With the invitation to new life comes also the means: the gift of the Holy Spirit\, breathed upon them and within them. Just as the Father sent Jesus into the world\, so now are these disciples sent as witnesses to God’s saving work. \nPentecost is therefore the crowning achievement of the Jesus story. Now\, more than ever\, these huddled disciples would have just cause to sing the “Dayenu” (“It would have been enough”) verses from the Passover seder meal\, but revised: It would have been enough for the Word and wisdom of God to have been born in the flesh . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough for the Word to grow to adulthood and share his stunning parables about God’s gracious activity in the world . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough for this Word to say to his enemies\, “Father\, forgive them” . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough for this Word to have died on a cross for us . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough that he rose again in blessing\, not vengeance . . . Dayenu! But now\, beyond what we would even expect—the Word becomes our word and it is written on our hearts at Pentecost . . . Dayenu! It is enough\, and more than enough to enflame our ministry of reconciliation in a world in need of a healing word. \n~From Sundays & Seasons
