Join Us for Special Celebration Recognizing NHRM Contributions

Although an executive order from the current administration has stopped the admittance of refugees to the United States, the North Hills Refugee Ministry, (made up of volunteers from Trinity Wexford, Perry Highway, and St. Johns Highland), continues to support refugees and immigrants in our area. NHRM recently was awarded its third grant from the Ethel L. Verney Fund through the Southwestern PA Synod. NHRM continues to work with JFCS to meet critical needs in our area, such as ESL tutoring and delivery of furniture, bedding, space heaters, infant car seats and other needed supplies. NHRM has also delivered bulk supplies to community centers that meet the needs of frightened strangers in our country.

NHRM was recently notified that it is the recipient of JFCS’ 2026 Aryeh Sherman Volunteer of the Year Award and will be formally recognized by JFCS during a special celebration on May 20th. Cristy Lagnese, Community & Donor Engagement Manager for JFCS Pittsburgh wrote:

“We are delighted to honor your group for its exceptional contributions to the Refugee and Immigrant Services Department. Your longtime commitment to refugee co‑sponsorship—most recently through mentoring a single mother and providing essential household items to families in Charleroi and throughout the Pittsburgh region—is deeply appreciated. The care and consistency you bring to this work clearly reflect your compassion and dedication.

You have built genuine, lasting relationships with the families you support and consistently gone above and beyond, from helping set up furniture in new homes to assisting clients with technology challenges. Your continued connection with the families you originally helped resettle speaks volumes, especially as you support them in navigating new concerns related to ICE and emergency planning. Through your generosity of both time and spirit, you help ensure families feel supported, confident, and cared for.”
