DESCRIPTION:Join us for Special Saturday Evening Service  — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nAbundance from Scraps\nJesus is able to feed us abundantly\, even with scraps. He meets earthly needs by feeding the crowds and continues now to offer himself as holy meal\, freely given to all\, no matter their income or rank in society. Advertisers have trained us that what’s proclaimed as “free” usually isn’t. More often\, it’s a ploy to get our money for some other\, larger\, purchase. Today we are invited to trust and receive Jesus’ free gift of love without mistrusting that he’s got some scheme up his sleeve. \nIt can be hard to relax and trust God to take care of us and nourish us with the mere scraps we often see around us. We panic and take matters into our own hands instead of trusting. We experience that crushing sense of responsibility\, not just to ourselves\, but to our children or parents or other loved ones to keep them fed and clothed and healthy. Trusting as the crowd did that day seems completely foreign to those of us living in North America\, abundant in resources. \nWith food freely given\, with quantity enough to feed only a few\, Jesus makes this miracle\, and there are leftovers to clean up. But for most of us\, belief comes slowly and warily when we’ve been burned by experience: How will there be enough for all of us\, when we’ve been the last one at the lunch line\, the late arrival at the party\, and everything’s gone? What if we see people in the crowd we don’t want fed and jostle our way to the head of the line to get first choice? Will it be fair? Trusting that our daily bread and even our very lives are in God’s hands is hard to do as we grow older and are burdened by responsibility\, but God has compassion for every member of the crowd\, and we are blessed and invited to be joyful recipients of that generosity. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nSilencing the Wind\nIn a world filled with noise and empty words\, God comes to us as stillness and silence\, even to the point that wind ceases (Matt. 14:32). Jesus walks over stormy waters to his disciples\, entering their boat and being present with them despite their fears and doubts. Today’s readings encourage us to keep our words spare and meaningful\, to lay aside our little faith with its wordy worries\, and to listen for God\, who comes to us as quieting comfort. \nThe wind blows us powerfully\, frighteningly\, making even familiar places seem strange\, stirring up the water to obscure our vision and make our journey fearful and slow. Today Jesus comes to us in our drowning panic\, quickly responding to our “Lord\, save me!” (v. 30). The “little faith” (v. 31) of Peter (and our little faith) is not only a chiding to “do better” in our faith lives and respond to Jesus’ call with discipline. It holds room for forgiveness. Even when we risk and screw up anyway\, God’s hand is there to reach out and catch us. \nTo command even the wind to be still is a powerful thing. If a very strong wind suddenly stopped near one of us\, we would probably panic\, wondering who did it\, whether it was the calm eye of a storm\, or whether a still bigger tornado is coming. But Jesus walked out upon the water and helped Peter in his fear to return to the boat’s safety and security. Jesus gives powerful reassurance and the gift of presence. God is not distant from our fears\, but close to keep us safe. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nWe Are Beggars\, This Is True\n“We are beggars; this is true.” These are reported to be Martin Luther’s last written words. Christians are “beggars” for God’s grace\, undeserving but graced nonetheless. A beggar’s faith focuses not on what is given or accomplished or believed\, but on what is received: the healing and sustenance desperately longed for and needed. \nIn today’s gospel\, the Canaanite woman is such a “beggar” for Jesus’ healing for her daughter. She is denied a place at the table at first\, but she will accept even “crumbs” in the faith that Jesus’ healing power and love are intended even for her. As a gentile\, she inhabits the margins of Jesus’ mission “to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matt. 15:24). Jesus’ eventual response to her beggar’s faith reveals that the love of God even encompasses the margins. \nMarginalized or not\, we are all beggars before God\, as Paul reminds the Romans—all “imprisoned . . . in disobedience” (Rom. 11:32) and dependent on God. Thus\, our sense of “insider” and “outsider” crumbles in the face of our common need and God’s abundant mercy to all. Instead of dividing those who have a place at the table and those who get crumbs\, we have an opportunity to share hospitality with our fellow beggars. \nIt can be challenging to see ourselves as beggars. Today the Canaanite woman becomes our model\, as she persists with both humility and audacity. As disciples of Jesus and “beggars” for God’s grace\, we live the same paradox of humility and audacity\, boldly coming to Jesus and humbly acknowledging our need. Even though crumbs from God’s table would be enough for us\, we are offered instead the abundance of Jesus’ own self in bread and wine and invited to share this abundance with insider and outsider alike. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nConfessing Christ\, Formed in Faith\nIn late August\, students are preparing to go back to school\, and many churches gear up for a new year of Christian education. It is a good time to be reminded of the heart of Christian formation: conformation and transformation (Rom. 12:2). \nDisciples are formed over time—shaped by learning\, worship\, and all aspects of Christian life in community. As it was for Peter\, part of our formation is learning to confess Jesus as the Messiah\, not only with the right words but also through an experience of the living God in Christ. And along with Peter\, through such formation we also discover who we are in relation to God: After Peter “confesses” Jesus’ identity of Messiah\, Jesus “confesses” Peter’s identity by calling out his name and vocation. \nTraditionally\, Lutheran worship contains two confessions which keep forming us: a confession of sin and a confession of faith. In the first\, we acknowledge who we are as sinner and saint\, and in the second\, we acknowledge who God is in the mystery of the Trinity. Like Peter’s\, our own identity is revealed in those truths. And\, we might say\, we are continually formed by and through them. \nPeter’s confession is not a precondition for following Jesus; it comes in the middle of his journey of discipleship. Our formation too is a long process—lifelong\, in fact—which begins at baptism (and even before!) and is guided by those who travel before and with us. At this time of year\, as we explore our own formation\, identity\, and vocation as disciples of Jesus\, Isaiah entreats us\, “Look to the rock from which you were hewn” (51:1). Envisioning Peter the “rock” (Matt. 16:18)\, we might also consider how we are “chips off the old block” of our forebears in faith. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons

DESCRIPTION:Joint Worship Service & Church Picnic\nJoin us for a special morning of worship\, fellowship\, and food as Perry Highway Lutheran Church and Heritage United Presbyterian Church gather together for a Joint Worship Service and Picnic on Sunday\, August 30\, at 10:00 a.m. For food planning\, we ask that you RSVP here.  \nThis year’s gathering will take place at the Ohio Township Pavilion\, located at 325 Nicholson Road\, Sewickley\, PA 15143. The pavilion offers ample parking\, flush restroom facilities\, and easy accessibility\, making it a comfortable and welcoming location for everyone. \nOur worship service will celebrate the unity we share as followers of Christ and the friendships that continue to grow between our congregations. Whether you’ve attended these joint services before or this is your first time\, we invite you to come and experience a joyful morning of worship in God’s beautiful creation. \nFollowing worship\, we’ll enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch together. Burgers and hot dogs will be provided\, with vegetarian and gluten-free options available so everyone can enjoy the meal. To help round out the picnic\, we invite each household to bring a favorite side dish or dessert to share. \nIf you have one\, please bring a camp chair or folding chair for additional seating. DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nCalled to Community\nJesus says\, “For where two or three are gathered in my name\, I am there among them” (Matt. 18:20). In these Sundays after Pentecost\, we are repeatedly reminded that God has not abandoned us and that Christ’s resurrection and ascension are a beginning for us\, not an end. The readings this week focus on the practical work of the gathered Christian community: turning from sin to repentance\, from conflict to reconciliation. The question is as relevant today as it was for the disciples and the first Christians: How do we live together\, work together\, as the body of Christ? We have been saved by grace\, liberated by God’s love to love one another. What does it mean for us and for our community to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom. 13:14) and to clothe ourselves in love? \nWe keep asking these questions because the way we gather as Christians continues to be profoundly countercultural. We do not gather as a social club\, drawn and kept together only by shared demographics and interests. If church is only a social club\, there is no reason to continue to gather if conflict arises\, if uncomfortable issues are raised\, or if “the way it’s always been” begins to change. If church is only a social club\, there is no reason to do the hard work of reconciliation and forgiveness. \nGod calls us into community knowing that being in community is hard. In scripture we can find practical guidance for gathering through good and hard times. The Holy Spirit is always at work—in\, through\, and among us—to gather and regather us again. In community we meet and become Christ’s body in ways that are impossible for us as individuals; all the commandments are fulfilled in this call to neighbor-love (Rom. 13:9). \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons

DESCRIPTION:Prayer Vigil\nJoin members of PHLC as we stand with our wider community at a weekly prayer vigil in support of immigrants who have been seized and are being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This vigil takes place every Friday\, beginning at 8:30 AM\, at the ICE Field Office\, 3000 Sydney Street\, Pittsburgh. It is grounded in faith\, compassion\, and a shared commitment to justice. \nEach gathering includes hymns\, spoken prayers\, and intentional moments of silence. Together\, we create sacred space in the midst of public life—bearing witness to the dignity of our immigrant neighbors and naming the harm caused by unjust systems. This is a peaceful\, quiet protest\, meant to remind the public that the suffering of our neighbors is not abstract or distant\, but real and happening in our community. \nParticipants are welcome to carry signs that reflect messages of hope\, solidarity\, and justice. In keeping with the spirit of the vigil\, there will be no shouting\, chanting\, or bullhorns. Those attending will stand on the public sidewalk only and may not enter the roadway or the property of the ICE facility. DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nNew Perspective\nBeing a disciple requires an expansive perspective on forgiveness. Today our perspective is broadened by the good news that God’s forgiveness is not based on our idea of fairness\, but rather on abundant\, unimaginable grace. God “[has] not dealt with us according to our sins\, nor repaid us according to our iniquities” (Ps. 103:10). The king forgives our entire debt\, no matter how enormous it is (Matt. 18:23-27). We also are challenged to stretch our perspective and forgive each other. With Peter\, we learn to stop keeping score (Matt. 18:21-22). \nIt’s not an easy thing to do. Again and again we fall back on limited human understandings of what is “fair.” Looking at the story of Joseph and his brothers\, it’s easy for us to say that his brothers really didn’t deserve forgiveness. Even their plea for forgiveness is dishonest and manipulative—have they really repented (Gen. 50:15-17)? Joseph takes the wider view and realizes that it isn’t his brothers’ intentions that matter\, but God’s. God’s forgiveness is much greater than what is fair\, what we deserve. \nSo what does this new\, broadened perspective look like in the lives of Christians and congregations? Paul provides a pragmatic glimpse: “Those who eat must not despise those who abstain\, and those who abstain must not pass judgment on those who eat\, for God has welcomed them” (Rom. 14:3). If all are truly welcomed by God\, we are called to share the good news of that welcome in all we say and do. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons
