DESCRIPTION:Prayer Vigil\nJoin members of PHLC as we stand with our wider community at a weekly prayer vigil in support of immigrants who have been seized and are being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This vigil takes place every Friday\, beginning at 8:30 AM\, at the ICE Field Office\, 3000 Sydney Street\, Pittsburgh. It is grounded in faith\, compassion\, and a shared commitment to justice. \nEach gathering includes hymns\, spoken prayers\, and intentional moments of silence. Together\, we create sacred space in the midst of public life—bearing witness to the dignity of our immigrant neighbors and naming the harm caused by unjust systems. This is a peaceful\, quiet protest\, meant to remind the public that the suffering of our neighbors is not abstract or distant\, but real and happening in our community. \nParticipants are welcome to carry signs that reflect messages of hope\, solidarity\, and justice. In keeping with the spirit of the vigil\, there will be no shouting\, chanting\, or bullhorns. Those attending will stand on the public sidewalk only and may not enter the roadway or the property of the ICE facility. These guidelines help ensure the safety of all involved and preserve the prayerful nature of the gathering. \nThis vigil is an act of faithful presence—showing up\, week after week\, to say that immigrants are beloved\, that families matter\, and that silence in the face of injustice is not an option. DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\nLife in Every Direction\nWe can identify death in every direction. We see war\, hunger\, addiction\, poverty\, a dying planet\, and broken hearts. This is not a new story. The children of Israel surely saw death in every direction\, wandering in the desert and at least occasionally wondering about their next meal. Paul looks at his own life and\, at first\, sees nothing beyond spiritual death. He reminds us that death is not just physical\, but also spiritual. Then\, in the parable of the sower\, three-fourths of the seeds die and three-fourths of the sections of the field are inhospitable to flourishing life. Sometimes\, life isn’t even given a chance. We might look at the world and ourselves and only see the places that are inhospitable to God’s love. \nToday’s texts all go a step further\, however\, to articulate or reveal God bringing forth life where there is only death in every direction. Cypress and myrtle trees rise up in the place of thorns and briars (Isa. 55:13). “Christ Jesus has set [us] free from the law of sin and of death\,” and the life-giving Spirit dwells in us (Rom. 8:2\, 10).The parable of the sower elicits reflection\, repentance\, and\, ultimately\, new life from its readers and hearers in considering the sort of spiritual life they practice. Are we hospitable or inhospitable to God’s word? This parable is a vivid reminder of all God has overcome—rocks\, scorching sun\, thorns\, and snatching—to bring life to the world. God brings forth life in places where people see only death. \n~From Sundays & Seasons

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\nJudgment and Mercy\nMatthew’s gospel knows little compromise: sheep or goats\, wheat or weeds\, good or evil. Finding the good news of God’s love for all people\, for all creation\, can be a challenge in this book. Today’s gospel is no exception. Jesus interprets a parable for the disciples; he announces that all evildoers will be thrown into the furnace of fire\, while the righteous will shine like the sun. The “Son of Man” will judge the world. Matthew’s phrase “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to . . .” occurs here for the first time in this gospel (Matt. 13:24). Jesus’ parable is a genuine metaphor—it is best viewed as a whole with no point-by-point comparison. The kingdom of believers has the same potential as those of the world to do good and to do evil. Jesus’ allegorical interpretation encourages believers to strive for righteousness and emphasizes God as judge. \nHowever\, in his letter to the church at Rome\, Paul focuses on God as merciful judge. He proclaims that all creation will be freed from decay and receive redemption. Paul reminds us that our hope lies with God\, our parent through a spirit of adoption. This dichotomous picture of God as judge and giver of mercy began with last Sunday’s texts and evidences itself in readings from Romans and Matthew across the next four Sundays. In some cases the God of mercy is highlighted in Paul’s letter\, at other times in the gospel. This good news\, however\, is always present! \nThe exercise of judgment and mercy reflects God’s emphasis on justice over fairness. A fair God condemns those who do evil. A just God moves beyond fairness to justice\, peace\, and reconciliation. As evil-doers\, sinners\, one and all\, we are grateful for God’s justice towards us and all people. \n~From Sundays & Seasons

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nThe Kingdom of Heaven Is Like . . .\nA string of parables describe the kingdom of heaven\, and then we hear Jesus’ question: “Have you understood all this?” The mustard seed\, yeast\, hidden treasure\, pearls—these bring good news of growth and joy and riches. Then come the fish\, the furnace of fire\, and the weeping and gnashing of teeth. Once again this week we hear of a God of mercy and justice. Once again there is good news to be heard in Paul’s letter to the church at Rome—nothing will ever separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus. How will we reconcile these two images of God? \n“Kingdoms” are not common in our world. When most of us think about kingdoms\, we call up images of British or other royalty—jeweled crowns\, a palace. At the time the Gospel of Matthew was written\, the people were subject to the empire\, or kingdom\, of Rome. Perhaps the writer wants us to contrast the oppressive rule of Rome with a vision of heaven’s kingdom of love and mercy. The translation of the Greek basileia\, a feminine word usually rendered in English as “kingdom\,” is difficult. The writer of Matthew may have used the expression “kingdom of heaven” instead of “kingdom of God” in order not to offend Jewish Christ-believers who honored the word for God by avoiding its use. \nKing Solomon asks God for the wisdom to discern between good and evil\, for the understanding to live out both justice and mercy as a ruler of God’s people. God was pleased with Solomon’s request. The wisdom Solomon seeks to rule his earthly kingdom reflects the wisdom of the kingdom of heaven. King Solomon was variously successful in his discernment of good and evil\, as are we. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons
