SUMMARY:Film Club
DESCRIPTION:Film Club\nFilm Club is getting together again\, and everyone is invited to join us for our next movie and discussion! We will meet over lunch on Sunday\, September 13th\, to watch A Serious Man (2009)\, a darkly humorous film from acclaimed filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen. \nThe film follows Larry Gopnik\, a physics professor whose life begins to unravel as he faces a series of unexpected personal\, professional\, and family challenges. As Larry searches for answers and tries to make sense of everything happening around him\, the film explores questions of faith\, uncertainty\, family\, morality\, and the sometimes absurd nature of life. There will be plenty to think about—and plenty to talk about! \nAfter watching the film\, we will gather again on Sunday\, October 4th\, which is also the day of our blood drive\, to discuss A Serious Man together. This gives everyone some time to reflect on the movie before we come together to share thoughts\, observations\, questions\, and different perspectives. \nFilm Club is a great opportunity to enjoy a good movie while also getting to know one another through thoughtful conversation and fellowship. Whether you are a longtime film enthusiast or simply enjoy watching an interesting movie and discussing it with others\, you are welcome to participate. \nSo\, mark your calendars for September 13th for the movie and October 4th for our discussion. We hope you can join us for this month’s selection and be part of the conversation! \nCome watch\, think\, laugh\, and discuss with us—because sometimes the best part of a movie is the conversation that follows.

SUMMARY:PHLC Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Book Discussion: The Experience of God\nOur book discussion group is currently reading The Experience of God: Being\, Consciousness\, Bliss by David Bentley Hart. This thought-provoking book explores the nature of God and the ways human beings understand and experience the divine. Hart draws on philosophy\, theology\, and the Christian tradition to invite readers to consider some of the most fundamental questions about God\, existence\, consciousness\, and ultimate reality. \nOur next discussion will focus on Chapter 4 and will take place on Sunday\, September 20\, following Adult Bible Study. We encourage everyone who has been reading along to join us for this conversation. \nWhether you have carefully worked through every page or are still making your way through the chapter\, you are welcome to participate. Our discussions provide an opportunity to explore the ideas presented in the book\, ask questions\, share different perspectives\, and consider how the themes connect with our faith and understanding of God. \nCome ready for a thoughtful and engaging conversation as we continue our exploration of Hart’s work together. Reading Chapter 4 in advance is encouraged so that everyone can participate fully in the discussion. \nFor more information about the book discussion or the upcoming meeting\, please contact John Spurlock. \nWe look forward to continuing this conversation and exploring The Experience of God together!

SUMMARY:Prayer Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Prayer Vigil\nJoin members of PHLC as we stand with our wider community at a weekly prayer vigil in support of immigrants who have been seized and are being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This vigil takes place every Friday\, beginning at 8:30 AM\, at the ICE Field Office\, 3000 Sydney Street\, Pittsburgh. It is grounded in faith\, compassion\, and a shared commitment to justice. \nEach gathering includes hymns\, spoken prayers\, and intentional moments of silence. Together\, we create sacred space in the midst of public life—bearing witness to the dignity of our immigrant neighbors and naming the harm caused by unjust systems. This is a peaceful\, quiet protest\, meant to remind the public that the suffering of our neighbors is not abstract or distant\, but real and happening in our community. \nParticipants are welcome to carry signs that reflect messages of hope\, solidarity\, and justice. In keeping with the spirit of the vigil\, there will be no shouting\, chanting\, or bullhorns. Those attending will stand on the public sidewalk only and may not enter the roadway or the property of the ICE facility. These guidelines help ensure the safety of all involved and preserve the prayerful nature of the gathering. \nThis vigil is an act of faithful presence—showing up\, week after week\, to say that immigrants are beloved\, that families matter\, and that silence in the face of injustice is not an option. Whether you come every Friday or are able to join us once\, your presence matters. \nThe vigil is hosted by Sisters of St. Joseph\, Pax Christi\, and Casa San José. All are welcome to come\, pray\, and stand in solidarity with our immigrant neighbors.

SUMMARY:Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nJesus\, Cornerstone of Our Faith\nGod has showered humanity with gifts and blessings\, but humanity continues to abuse those gifts. We have been entrusted with a creation to care for\, and in our shortsightedness we abuse and pollute the earth\, even bringing about the extinction of entire species. We have been given the ability to create so many wonderful things\, and even this gift we abuse as we gather and keep as much as we can for ourselves. \nThis is nothing new. Even in the days of Isaiah it was clear the people turned away from God’s gifts. God expected righteousness and justice. Instead the people responded with bloodshed and suffering\, turning away from God. \nEven if you can think of all the ways you have not turned from God and all the ways you have been faithful\, it does no good. As Paul reminds us in the reading from Philippians\, “Yet whatever gains I had\, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ” (Phil. 3:7). Even all of Paul’s good and faithful acts add up to nothing. For Paul\, and for us\, all that matters is Jesus. \nAs Christ himself reminds us\, he is our rock\, our cornerstone. Jesus is the foundation for our faith and the foundation for our lives. Even as we turn from Jesus\, even as we reject Jesus\, he returns to us with love and forgiveness. This is the grace of God\, the love of God coming into our world and into our lives. To our joy we discover the open arms of Jesus on the cross\, bringing life into this world even where there is death; bringing hope where there is despair; and bringing resurrection to all creation. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons

SUMMARY:Adult Bible Study
DESCRIPTION:Adult Bible Study\nAre you looking for a meaningful way to engage with scripture and connect with others on the journey of faith? Our ongoing Bible Study at Perry Highway Lutheran Church is the perfect opportunity to do just that—no matter where you are on your spiritual path. \nAt PHLC\, we believe Bible Study isn’t about having all the answers or being a “Bible expert.” Instead\, it’s about creating a welcoming space where curiosity is encouraged and every voice matters. Together\, we open the scriptures with honesty and humility\, asking real questions\, sharing life experiences\, and exploring how these ancient words continue to speak into our modern lives. Faith\, after all\, grows best in conversation. \nEach gathering is a blend of thoughtful reflection and genuine connection. Some weeks we find ourselves laughing together; other weeks we wrestle with challenging passages or tough questions about life\, justice\, and hope. Always\, we seek to listen deeply—to scripture\, to one another\, and to the movement of God in our everyday lives. This is a place where doubts are not feared\, stories are honored\, and grace is practiced. \nWhether you’ve been attending church for many years\, are returning after time away\, or are simply curious about scripture and faith\, you are truly welcome here. You don’t need prior knowledge\, special preparation\, or the “right” answers. Just bring your authentic self and an open heart. \nOur Bible Study community is grounded in encouragement and support\, helping one another discern how to live out a grace-filled\, compassionate life in the real world—at work\, at home\, and in our wider community. \nBest of all\, you can join us virtually\, making it easy to participate wherever life finds you. If you’re seeking connection\, thoughtful conversation\, and a deeper engagement with scripture\, we would love for you to be part of this journey with us. \nTo join virtually\, email Pastor Ryan at pastor@phlc.org for the link.

SUMMARY:Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nExpensive Wedding. Expensive Grace.\nAn average wedding in North America can easily cost tens of thousands of dollars—or more! From the venue to flowers to food\, invitations to music to photos\, formal wear to centerpieces to officiants\, getting married is not cheap. \nIn today’s gospel Jesus tells a parable about a wedding invitation\, a banquet\, and God’s grace. Jesus teaches about a king who ultimately invites all people to a wedding banquet. At first this parable seems to portray a wide open and gracious invitation to a wedding celebration. However\, by the end it is hard not to feel sorry for the poor guy who gets a last-minute invitation but gets thrown out for not wearing the correct wedding duds! Again\, getting married is not cheap—but neither is grace. \nReceiving God’s grace changes people. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer taught\, God’s grace is not cheap; it comes at a great cost upon the cross. Once we receive this costly grace\, our lives are never the same. This grace compels us to act and calls us to bear fruit with our lives\, sharing this grace with others. To continue to live in the same way after receiving this gracious invitation is not an option. So what are we to do? We simply receive the gracious invitation to the banquet and find a changing room—it’s time to live a new life. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons

Not Enough.\nSay the word stewardship in some congregations and people are protectively guarding their wallets faster than you can say “pledge card”! Unfortunately\, too often we associate stewardship exclusively with issues of money. The good news is that God wants our whole lives\, wallets and all! Nevertheless\, this week is prime time for stewardship campaigns in congregations across North America. Today’s gospel provides an ideal time to reflect on stewardship of all sorts—time\, talent\, and financial treasures. \nThe Pharisees approach Jesus in a thinly veiled attempt to trap him on issues of financial obligations to the Roman government. Their question of Jesus\, simplified to the extreme\, is\, “Who gets your wallet?” If Jesus answered one way\, he would be guilty of treason. If he answered the other way\, he would have been considered guilty of heresy in the eyes of the religious leaders. Jesus responds by issuing a challenge of his own: “Give . . . to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s” (Matt. 22:21). This statement challenges us to ponder: If God created the world and everything in it\, doesn’t everything belong to God? God wants a whole lot more than just your wallet. God wants your life\, wallet and all!

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 9:30 am on Sundays — We Make a Place for Everyone!\n\nJesus Is Really into Relationships!\nLove God\, love neighbor\, and love yourself. Jesus is really into relationships! Oftentimes\, even if unintentionally\, we put loving ourselves first\, and because “we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves” (ELW\, p. 95) we usually do a poor job of actually loving ourselves. This means we have less love to give to God and our neighbors. Jesus puts relationship with God first. He doesn’t do this to make us last but so that we can fully understand love and relationship the way God desires it for us. \nToday’s readings give us insight into the ways God desires us to be in relationship: by being just in all our dealings with others\, by not being led astray by the wicked\, by sharing the gospel with humility and tender care\, and by loving God and neighbor. It might sound simple\, but relationships are far from simple. Even the best relationships include struggle. \nPeople in our congregations struggle with relationships each and every day. Love should be an easy thing\, but it takes work and effort to love God\, love others\, and love oneself. The psalmist uses the image of trees planted by streams of water to describe people who “delight in the law of the Lord” (Ps. 1:2). These are not weak\, brittle\, or dying trees; these are strong trees that prosper. Our faith plants us\, nourishes us\, and strengthens us to love. \nHow can we be like trees planted by streams of water? In what ways can the church help people to make and maintain healthy relationships? How do we encourage self-worth and humility? This is an excellent day to ask these questions\, to create forums where answers can be discussed\, and to remind one another how much God truly loves us. \n\n~From Sundays & Seasons
