Understanding Baptism:
Baptism is a sacred rite and a means of grace, marking the recipient’s initiation into the Christian faith. It symbolizes the washing away of sin, the awakening of faith, and the individual’s incorporation into God’s family. We use water and the words, ‘I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.’
The Process:
1. Inquiry and Initial Contact: Contact us via email or call our church office. We’ll connect you with our pastoral team to discuss the baptism process.
2. Pre-Baptism Meeting: A meeting with the minister will be arranged to discuss the significance of baptism and answer any questions you might have. This meeting will include parents and godparents or sponsors for the baptism of infants or young children.
3. Scheduling: We will work with you to schedule the baptism during a regular Sunday service, allowing the congregation to witness and participate in welcoming the new member into the Christian faith.
Frequently Asked Questions:
- Who can be baptized? Anyone can be baptized! But we quickly add the caveat: some responsibilities come along with baptism, which are outlined in the liturgy that we use when we baptize young people. This is covered in the next bullet point.
- What is the role of godparents/sponsors? We ask the parents and sponsors to be willing:
- to live with them among God’s faithful people,
- bring them to the word of God and the holy supper,
- teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments,
- place in their hands the holy scriptures,
- and nurture them in faith and prayer,
- so that they may learn to trust God,
- proclaim Christ through word and deed,
- care for others and the world God made,
- and work for justice and peace.
- and Do you promise to help your child grow in the Christian faith and life?
- Do we need to be church members to have our child baptized? We ask the parents or guardians of the baptized to consider joining our church’s membership and participating in the worship and ministries of our church, as these are some of the responsibilities outlined in deciding to have your child baptized! The whole point of baptism is to welcome children or adults into the life of a community that follows Jesus. It’s not a box to check off. It’s celebrating the beginning of our relationship with God in the community. Be part of that with us here at Perry Highway Lutheran Church!
