Seven years ago, on January 12, 2010, a massive earthquake ravaged Haiti, claiming over 300,000 lives. In 2011, you will remember, that the Hospital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti was our “Agency of The Year”. In the years that followed there were more earthquakes, hurricanes, droughts and Cholera outbreaks. Just this past October, Hurricane Matthew struck. After the storm there were more than 800,000 people living in temporary shelters, and the hurricane claimed more than 1000 lives.
The Social Outreach Ministry Team is planning to focus on Haiti again in 2017. We will do this through agencies that are well known to Perry Highway Lutheran Church. Our plan is to utilize January through March’s Second Mile Giving funds to support Lutheran World Relief’s efforts in Haiti. LWR has got staff on the ground working to distribute shelter kits and food kits. They’ve sent emergency water filters so families have access to safe drinking water. Our Second Mile Giving will support these efforts.
During the second and third quarters we will utilize Second Mile Giving to support Compassion International. As you may remember, Perry Highway Lutheran families are supporting many Haitian children through Compassion International. Most of our sponsored children are from 2 or 3 Child Development Centers. Our plan is to identify a specific need at each of these Child Development Centers and utilize Second Mile funds to further support our sponsored boys and girls. You will be hearing more details on both LWR and Compassion International support as the year progresses.
As in past years, our 4th quarter Second Mile Giving will be to support the Good Samaritan Fund. Matthew 25:40 – “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ Yours in Christ, The Social Outreach Ministry Team
