July 20 – Rome, Italy

After more hotdogs and peaches, we left to catch our bus with every intention of going to the Colosseum, but found ourselves at the Vatican instead, and how lucky we were! After being gone for so long, we had all lost concept of time and had no idea that it was Sunday. So at noon we hear cheering and see the Pope standing at the window and beginning to read scripture. Unfortunately, he was speaking Italian so none of us had a clue what he was saying. (Julia later informed us that typically the Pope is preaching from his vacation home outside of Rome all of July, so seeing him was pure luck. Maybe he knew I was coming!) As we got together for a family picture I looked in my bag to find I had lost Jesus!! (Flat Jesus that is.) Laura reassured us that he would turn up in three days. We made our way to a stand up bistro where Rick got ripped off because the cashier didn’t know how to calculate change.

We hopped on the bus again and climbed the Spanish steps before we made our way to the Colosseum. After a 45-minute line in the 95-degree sun, we finally got our tickets and enjoyed the beautiful monument! Due to the horrible sun, Julia was getting a migraine and we were all pretty tired. So we headed back to the hotel.

After we rested for a while, we went to another outside restaurant where we were pleasantly serenaded by accordion music.
